Live edge wood keeps the natural edge of the tree intact rather than cutting it into straight lines. It shows the tree's unique shape, grain, and character, making each slab one of a kind.
“Live edge” means the wood's natural contour is preserved instead of being squared off. The result is an organic, rustic look often used for tables, shelves, and countertops.
You can buy live edge wood slabs directly from Mustard Seed Wood Transformations in Wisconsin and the surrounding area. We offer locally milled slabs from native species and can even custom cut your own logs with our portable sawmill service. Get a quote to get started.
If you're outside of the midwest, look for a local sawmill or specialty lumberyard that carries rough-cut or live edge slabs.
Live edge slabs are often turned into tables, bar tops, shelves, benches, and mantels. Because each piece is unique, they're great for custom furniture or home projects with a natural look.
Sand the slab smooth, remove any loose bark, and seal it with an oil, polyurethane, or epoxy finish. This helps protect the wood and highlight the grain.
If you want to keep the bark, make sure it's solidly attached. Clean it gently with a soft brush and seal it with a clear epoxy or resin to lock it in place. Be aware that bark can loosen over time, especially indoors with changing humidity.
